Mysore Style Ashtanga Yoga is named after the teacher K Pattabhi Jois taught from the late 1930s until his death in 2009 in the city of Mysore, Karnataka, India. Mysore Style Ashtanga Yoga teachers do not lead the students through the sequence with generalised instructions or demonstrations.

Instead, students turn up and get on with the practice giving teacher time to reach every individuals and apply the hands on adjustment. Complete beginners are advised to go for a detailed yoga course prior to begin the primary sequence. That will give you ability to know the correct alignment of a posture and knowledge how it performed.

When they have learnt this, the teacher helps to further with the practice by incorporating the hands on adjustments. Mysore Style Ashtanga Yoga is focused on hands adjustments. And if you forget, the teacher is there to help you.

Practising in this way gives you the space to focus on the practice. Moving on to the next posture depends on your own breath, instead of a teacher’s instructions.

Students can therefore able to spend a little longer time on their practice and holding asanas according to individuals capability and desire. Essentially, you become your own teacher.
